Water Polo: Palmer-Sammons binds one-game record, Scots notch first win against Viking

Sherman, Texas – The Water Polo team of the Macalester College opened a conference game at Austin College today. In their first game of the day they dominated Carthage 17-8. In their second game they played a game with a lower score, but managed to achieve their first victory against Augustana in a 7: 5 victory.

The Scots fell into an early hole against the Firebirds. Carthage rattled three unanswered points to open the duel and led 5: 1 to junior Jess Palmer-Sammon (Half Moon Bay, California/Half Moon Bay) hit a goal with a second on the quarter clock. Palmer-Sammons made both Scot goals in this opening framework.

Mac continued to fight in the second quarter and was 4: 7 in half. After the break, however, the Scots came to life. Palmer-Sammons have entered two quick destinations Kendall Coney (League City, Texas/Clear Creek) has noticed its own to tie the game. From there the Scots dominated. Macalester prevailed the Firebirds in the second half with 13: 1, including a 9-0 run to close the game. The Firebirds scored their last point 4:43 on the clock in the third quarter. Mac scored nine points in the third quarter, the most season in a single period.

Palmer-Sammons scored five points and nine in the third quarter alone. These nine goals tie Catherine Flint '12 for most by a Scotsman in a single game. Flint registered the record against Chatham in 2010. Gaisser ended the game with three goals and four templates. Coney scored two goals in the game.

The match against the Vikings had a similar start for the Scots, who had suffered a 0: 2 in the first quarter. In the second quarter, however, Mac found her sea legs and reacted with its own 4-0 period. Coney, Gaisser, Senior Sian Lewandowski (North Haven, Conn./Williston Northampton) and senior Olivia Dimka (Denton, Texas/John H. Guyer) each hit to put a two -point in the lead for the Scots.

From there, Macalester drove her lead to victory. Gaisser scored a few goals to keep the Vikings in the third quarter, and a timely score of Palmer-Sammons in fourth finally brought Augustana away.

Junior goalkeeper Jayden Kratt (Palo Alto, California/Henry M. Gunn) has registered a penalty block to help the Scots win the game. The 7: 5 victory is Macalester's first victory in the program history against Augustana, a relatively new but dominant team in the CWPA. The Vikings had won the last six games against the Scots.

Gaisser led all Mac goal shooters in the second game with three goals, which brought them to six that day. Palmer-Sammons ended today at 10, while Coney was completed with three.

The water polo team will return tomorrow, March 16, for another few games. The first will pass bright and early against Austin at 8 a.m., and the other will later take place against Penn State Behrend at 1:15 p.m. Both games will take place in Sherman, Texas, and complete the team's journey to Lone Star State.
