Ovechkin is approaching Gretzky's record: just seven goals away

The Russian striker Alexander Ovechkin is now only seven goals that Wayne Gretzky's long-term record for most career goals in NHL history. Ovechkin reached this remarkable milestone on March 16, 2025 during the Washington Capitals game against the San Jose Sharks, where he scored his 887 goal. This performance not only brings him closer to Gretzky's 894 career goals, but also breaks the NHL record for most goals against various goalkeepers and exceeds the previous record of Jaromir Jagr.

Ovechkin, who is now playing his 20 season, has another productive year. Teemu Selanne, the Finnish Hockey -Hall of Famer, expressed his excitement about Ovechkin's striving for Gretzky's record and said: “I am excited to see that something that many thought was impossible. The buzzing around the team and the league is palpable, and everyone is excited that this recording falls because it is really something special.”
