Novak Djokovic has the chance to come back with a bang at the Miami Open from Itau at the Miami Open.

The 37-year-old Serbian, who has not been present at the ATP Masters 1000 event from Hardcourt since 2019, can stay away from Andre Agassi by raising his record title there. Djokovic would also reach the 100-tour title brand at the tour level if he can triumph for the first time since 2016 in Miami.

Before the 2025 edition of the Miami Open presented by Itau, Atptour.com reflects the breathtaking tournaments of Agassi and Djokovic.

Everything adds up

Agassi defines the Miami pace
There was no crossover on the square between Agassi and Djokovic, both former No. 1 in the PIF ATP ranking, in Miami: The American came there in 2005, a year before an 18-year-old Djokovic, his final appearance of his event debut. At that time, the Legacy Agassi left behind in Florida seemed almost insurmountable.

After lifting the trophy on the Miami Open in 1990 presented by Itau, the first edition after the integration of the event into the newly created Masters 1000 category, Agassi achieved a few difficult years in Florida by reaching three consecutive final from 1994 to 1996. He lost the first of which on his great rival Pete Sampras, but he avenantly avoided this defeat in the 1995 championship game before completing his hat trick with titles in 1996.

After another last appearance in 1998 (left to Rios), Agassi in Miami recorded a resuscitation in New Millery when he was the first man to win three consecutive titles at the event in 2001-03 (he and Djokovic are the only ATP tour players who have reached this feature).

Agassi was denied a final appearance in Miami in 2006 based on an injury, the year in which the young Djokovic Paul-Henri Mathieu defeated in the first round before fell to Guillermo Coria. But the love of the Americans for a tournament in which he could not be bowed six of his 17 Masters 1000 Crowns and a record of 61 Main Draw games.

“I always loved playing here,” considered the then 34-year-old American, who later retired this year at the US Open, at a press conference to announce his retreat. “It's a great place. Many memories, many great games, certainly one of the best arenas for me to be of my best. ”

Teenage Novak's master 1000 moment
It didn't take long for Djokovic to master the hot and moist conditions in Miami after his defeat in the second round of 2006 against Coria. The Serbian returned a year later and raised his Virgin Masters 1000 Trophy, the only one he claimed as a teenager, with the charge of the title without dropping a set. His statement from 2007 included a quarter-final victory against Rafael Nadal, a 6-1, 6-0 half-final triumph against Andy Murray (who will train Djokovic in Miami this year) and a last victory against Guillermo Canas.

“It certainly feels great,” said Djokovic when he was asked if he was the latest champion in tournament history (a record that was broken by Carlos Alcaraz in 2022). “It means that your name is in the history of sport. I am very proud of it. I know that I worked hard during my entire career to reach this point, and I hope that this is only the beginning of a long career. ”

Djokovics Florida dynasty
Although Djokovic quickly established himself as one of the best players in the world, he fell in 2008 and 2010 in Crandon Park, on both sides of a defeat for the 2009 championship games against Murray. Nevertheless, these Topsy Turvy years preceded half a Deccheenth of the dominance for the Serbia in Miami.

Djokovic won the title in five of six years from 2011 to 2016, with Tommy Haas spoiling his Miami record in this period in 2013. In four of these five championship games, he defeated a rival by Big Four (Rafael Nadal in 2011 and 2014, Murray in 2012 and 2015), while he triumphed four top -20 players, including Dominic Thiem and finalist Kei Nishikori.

With this last title run, which he had met with a 6-3, 6: 3 victory against Nishikori, Djokovic not only achieved a level for most Miami men's individual titles with Agassi. In the same year (2011, 2014-16) he also secured a record of “Sunshine Double” of the win in Indian Wells and Miami. Roger Federer (2005-06, 2017) is the only other man who manages this performance several times, while Agassi (2001) is one of the other five who have completed it once.

“Every year in which I come back to Miami, I assume these memories in 2007. It was the first champions I won and opened up many doors, gave me a lot of confidence, ”Djokovic reflected after his victory in 2016, his 28th Masters 1000, which was also free from Nadal for this record. “I noticed that I could win the big trophies and beat the best players in the world. Of course, this is a special place for me that I can come back to and now win six times. ”

A new record in 2025?
Since then, Djokovic has improved his record masters 1000 title -Bally to 40, but this year he comes to Miami with a lot to think about before he can think for number 41. Like Agassi, Djokovic won all six his Miami title at the former house of the tournament, Crandon Park in Key Biscayne. During his only earlier appearance at the current event location of the event, Hard Rock Stadium, the Serbier fell to Roberto Bautista Agut in the fourth round in 2019.
