Carter Starocci from Penn State follows the NCAA wrestling story, but a plate is difficult to grasp

Carter Starocci from Penn State is perhaps the most fascinating wrestler at the NCAA WRESTLER championships 2025, one that can plant a remarkable flag in College Wrestling story. Starocci Can was the first five-time champion in the NCAA-Division I Wrestling History, the product of NCAA wrestlers, which received a free season of justification in 2021. The moment is unlikely, as Penn State coach Cael Sanderson said.

“With these unique circumstances to have the chance to go to a fifth Penn State’s Carter Starocci Chases NCAA Wrestling History, But One Record Is Elusive is pretty cool, “said Sanderson recently on the Show Penn State Trainer“Something that hopefully will never happen again.”

Last year Starocci and former teammates Aaron Brooks became the sixth and seventh wrestler in NCAA history to win their fourth division I title (Sanderson is also in this group). And if Starocci wins his fifth, this record would probably (and hopefully, as Sanderson said), alone in the NCAA record books forever. But for most NCAA titles it won't be a college wrestling record. This is part of the late Carlton Haselig, who put together one of the most unique careers in College wrestling history.

Haselig fought Pitt-Johnstown in the late 1980s and won an unprecedented six NCAA heavyweight wrestling title. How? By a peculiarity in the NCAA rules at this time.

As a hazelrig, wrestler in Division II were also able to compete at the NCAA championships of Division I. Haselig rank for Division II Pitt-Johnstown, where he set up a career record of 143-2-1. Haselig was particularly successful in March. From 1987 to 1989 Haselig won three NCAA Division II championships in heavyweight. Two weeks after winning this title, Haselig went to the NCAA Division I championships, where he also won three heavyweight titles.

Haselig sent a NCAA record by winning 122 successive fights at Pitt-Johnston, according to hisNational Wrestling Hall of Fame Biography. He was particularly dominant at the national tournaments. Haselig went 15-0 at the NCAA Division I championships.

Until 1990, the national champions received in divisions II and III. National Wrestling Hall of Fame. After Haselig won three titles of Division I, the NCAA raised these offers when the coaches of Division I suggested that they provided coaches with lower divisions. The decision became known as a “Haselig rule”. As a result, wrestler can no longer compete on several NCAA wrestling championships, which means that Haselrig's record is probably not broken. Even the potential five titles from Starocci would decrease as outliers.

Haselig was also known for what he did after college. In 1990, the Pittsburgh stealers selected Haselig in the 12th round of the NFL design. Haselig played five NFL games, four with the Steelers, and in 1992 was an offensive -Opensive -Offensive -Line -Lineman. Haselig died in 2020 at the age of 54.

“At that time I definitely didn't understand the size of it”, ” The NCAA told Haselig For a story of 2018. “It was not an easy task to win just one, but it makes me happy and proud to look back what I have achieved.”

The Starocci of Penn State begins on Thursday at the wrestling championships of the NCAA Division I in the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia after a fifth national title. It is the seed No. 1 in the 184 pound weight class and brings a 21-0 record for its fifth NCAA championships.
