Arcaico instruments from Italy have released its dominus complex oscillator with wave folding with a new front panel.

In 2023, the Italian boutique manufacturer Arcaico instruments released the Dominus complex. It offers a lot of functionality at a fair price.

The module was released again two years after its publication. The Dominus has a new facial design and has become a little cheaper.

The functional rate has not changed compared to the 2023 version. It offers two identical complex oscillators with four wave shapes and 1 V/OCT stability up to 10 octaves.

It is difficult to say which front panel is better. I actually like them, maybe even better the 2023.

The new version of Arcaico Instruments Dominus is now available for € 270 from Italy.

One, two or three oscillators form the basis for every modular synthesizer. If you want to take the next step, screw a complex oscillator in your oscillator. It is a module with two oscillators that have a certain modulation in between, which enables the creation of harmoniously rich wild sounds.

Complex oscillators were found early in Buchla synthesizers. Nowadays they are also popular in the Eurorack world. And there are many new ones every year. Dominus from Italy is the latest publication that covers this topic.

Arcaico Dominus

Dominus is a new double sawn complex VCO with an integrated wave folder from the Italian company Arcaico. The developers who have already given us the exciting Zaar-Drum voice or the dirty multi-effect bearing base.

It consists of two independent VCOs with 4 wave shapes each (saw, impulse …), 1V/October and classic VCO controls. Including frequency (6Hz-24,000 Hz), fine-tuning … and more. According to the developer, you have a very stable 1 V/OCT control of up to 10 octaves.

Each VCO also has an independent level of the plane and PWM with life and dampers. You can also synchronize them and use linear and exponential frequency modulation (FM). It is now becoming more exciting.

There is a wave folder in the middle of the module. Nice: You can choose whether you want to forward both oscillators or just one through the wave folder level. It has two buttons. The shape fits the end result, modified and distorted while the radius places the area over a certain frequency band. There is also a résumé regulation on the radius parameter. It's a shame that the shaper, also known as a wave folder itself, cannot be animated

With the wave folder you can quickly bring the two oscillators into new sound worlds. In those in which sharp, harmonious noises are at home.

First look

The interface is kept simple. The thick buttons in the upper area make the module look very remarkable and valuable. I like the design. The sound also convinces at the first hearing. I don't know if we need another complex oscillator, but more selection is never wrong.

Arcaico Dominus is now available for € 295.
