The hard work begins

The way to success began long before the light came out in Melbourne. Alex 'strict preparation started in California in January and worked closely with his performance trainer Patrick Harding to ensure that he was in a maximum physical and mental state for the coming season.
A strong pre-season test in Bahrain at the end of February injected the Grove Team Optimism. After a productive low season and a solid test program, we had built a solid basis on which we were able to work in the opening rounds of the season.

Overcome past openers

Historically, the first races of the year were not the friendliest for Alex. The results of P14 for Toro Rosso in 2019 and a classified P13 (after he had retired prematurely in 2020 after four rounds) meant that the waiting time continued at an opening point of the season.

During his time at Williams, his fortune hadn't been much better, with just one point from his previous three season opening with us (P13 in Bahrain 2022, P10 in 2023 and P15 in 2024). However, there was the feeling that things could be different in 2025.

Apart from a small brake problem in FP1, which was quickly solved, the three exercise sessions went smoothly. Albon ended P6 in FP1, P12 in FP2 and P7 in FP3 – a promising sign of what would come. But the actual test would be qualified.

A strong qualifying performance

For the first time in 2025, qualifying would reveal the true chopping order of the network, and Williams proved that they were firmly in the mix. Both cars rose in Melbourne for the first time in Melbourne for the first time in Melbourne, a significant achievement for the team.

In his last round round, Albon delivered a star 1: 15,737 and secured a P6 grille slot for the race. However, the unpredictable weather in Melbourne had another turn: race day would be a wet and wild matter.

The chaos of the race day

As a forecast, the conditions on Sunday were tricky. The temporary track surface of Albert Park, combined with street markings, made the handle unpredictable. Even before the race started, Isack Hadjar's shoot in the formation round led to a broken start and a 15-minute delay, which forced Alex to concentrate again.

At Lights Out, our NO23 kept it clean in a dramatic opening round, in which two drivers were equipped on a difficult part of the route on a difficult part of the route, including teammates Carlos Sainz, who switched in difficult time. Alex only lost one position on the opening trip to Charles Leclerc and campaigned in P7.

When the race developed, Albono was cool in the mixed conditions. He initially attacked Yuki Tsunoda, but soon had to switch to tire management mode when his intermediate products started to carry. Behind him presented a huge challenge of a seven-time world champion in the form of Lewis Hamilton, which gave his Ferrari debut.

In several rounds, Albon stopped the extensive British and used its energy in the perfect moments to keep his FW47 in advance.

According to the challenge, Albon later explained: “Under these conditions, the only thing is to know their limits.

“It is easy to switch off your brain and just drive with the limit, but you need a small barrier to the border.

“It was so gust today, with more rain, drying out, overheating of tires, tires, the cold, safety car restarts. All of this means that you cannot drive at 99%, not even 99%. You need to know when you take risks and when not. “

Tires or lower

A master class in strategy

When Fernando Alonso's crash in round 34 triggered a security car, the entire field took the opportunity to switch to smooth tires. Alex chose the media and knew that they would warm up faster than the hard connection that some of his rivals had selected.

In the restart, he immediately put Tsunoda under pressure. When the race entered his last phase, all eyes turned to the sky. A rain category 3 was imminent and the team had to make a critical strategy call.

Since Carlos Sainz now played an important role in the pit wall, Alex had an insight into the deterioration conditions. In round 44 the rain suddenly arrived in the last sector. Leclerc revolved in curve 11 and forced Albon to take evasive measures. When he left Turn 12, he discovered both McLarens who recovered from a trip. When he recognized the moment, he dipped into the box for a different sentence of intermediate products.

Alex filtered on P9 and six drivers who played on Slicks when the rain continued. Three of the six would move in in the next round and only the two Ferraris and Liam Lawson caution on the wind on their smooth tires.

In Albert Park there is very little lead for mistakes

But the conditions were too much, and it didn't take long for the security car to be used again – Lawson turned to T2 and Gabriel Bortoleto also did at T15.

Under the security car, both Ferrari cars finally be peeled up to delete their hard tires for intermediate products and increase Alex to the restart on P4.

“They survive and they have a chance,” said Alex about the tricky conditions. “I talked about it myself in the race, it's so slippery out there.

“You cannot create these lines here as flu as asphalt, and these cars are now running so low that they feel the difference between asphalt and color.”

Bring it home

When the rain waned, Albon was now faced with the challenge of holding back Andrea Kimi Antonelli's accused. Despite brave defense efforts, the young Italian DRS sat down to hit the top of the lake.

Antonelli initially received a penalty of five seconds, but this was suspended in the appeal procedure, which confirmed Albon's P5 finish.

Albon was thrilled: “I'm really happy. It was such a crazy race.

“I'm still trying to make my head about it! It is fantastic for the team – a P5 is something very special and can't happen many times this year.

“Our strategist did a great job. To be honest, it was so difficult out there; These conditions are usually what we hate, and yet we were still one of the strongest midfield runners out there.

“Points like today mean a lot and I am positive about what will come. We are a very bound team and it was great that Carlos also helped at the mine wall. This is for everyone at Grove, for all their work. “

The prediction window for this Grand Prix has now closed.
