Save water with simple tips during the fixing of a leak week

Join the Department of Water and Wastewater Department of Miami-Dade (WASD) to maintain the natural resources of our district by participating in “Fix a Leak Week”, which will be observed this week from March 17 to March 23. Finding and fixing leaks can help to reduce almost a trillion gallons of water waste from American households every year.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), leaks can make up almost 10,000 gallons wasted in an average house every year – the amount of water it takes to wash 270 loads of laundry.

About 10 percent of all households have a kind of plumber leak, which leads to thousands of gallons unused water per year, which also increases their water bill. Most of these leaks result from worn washers, flaps or faulty tank valves.

In order to save water for future generations, Wasd asks consumers to check, twist and replace:

  • Check for LECKS: Find dripping taps, shower heads, sprinklers and other devices. Also check whether you are looking for toilets with quiet leaks by dyeing a few drops of food in the tank, waiting for 10 minutes and seeing whether the color appears in the bowl before rinsing. Don't forget to check irrigation systems and pins.
  • Dress and put on hose and pipe connections: To save water without a noticeable difference in your bathroom, turn a tap leaf with a tap.
  • Replace the lamp if necessary: Find for marked models with Watersense, which are independently certified, to use 20 percent less water and also do better than standard models.

Customers who find and repair underground or hidden leaks can also be justified for their water invoices.

“Our employees are looking for LECKS in our system and in 2024 we saved more than 2.4 million gallons water by identifying and prioritizing repairs on more than 7,500 miles, said Amada Kinnick, Interim Director of Wasd Interim.”

In many cases, the spare parts of the fixes pay themselves quickly and can be installed by practical do-it-your-selfer or local sanitary professionals. Irrigation experts who are certified via a program labeled with water sessions can also check their systems for leaks.

For the tips on water protection and reading the Lickdetection Manual of the Miami-Dade water and wastewater department, you will find the delicious manual from WASD.

It is the priority of the Department of Miami-Dade water and wastewater department to offer its customers a safe and reliable service. Further information on department services and programs can be found on the department of the department.
