Uab under investigation by the federal government for racial -based scholarship practices

The examination follows a Dear CollaGue letter, which was issued by the US office for civil rights on February 14, and repeated that educational institutions that receive federal financing that have to eliminate the use of racial preferences and stereotypes in approvals, settings, scholarships and other programs.

OCR conducts the investigation in accordance with title VI of the Civil Rights Act from 1964, which prohibits discrimination due to breed, color and national origin in nationwide -financed educational programs.

Minister of Education Linda McMahon made a written statement on the investigation.

“The department is working on reorganizing the enforcement of civil rights to ensure that all students are protected against illegal discrimination,” she said. “The pupils must be assessed according to earnings and performance that are not biased by the color of their skin.”

Uab is one of six universities that were identified for the alleged participation in inadmissible racial -based scholarship practices. OCR also initiated a broader examination of 45 other universities for alleged racial exclusion in graduate programs and another university for allegedly operated segregation programs.

If the investigations determine that these institutions violate title VI, they could be exposed to correction measures, including the potential loss of federal financing. The Ministry of Education has also issued frequently asked questions (FAQs) to ensure further clarification in relation to the expectations of compliance.

The investigation of UAB is part of a greater effort of the federal government to assess whether the universities align their guidelines with the legal requirements for racial -based discrimination. The results of these examinations can have a significant impact on how the universities structure scholarship programs and other initiatives to support students in the future.
