The National Hurricane Center (NHC) monitors a disturbance in the northern Atlantic, months before the official start of the season of the Atlantic Hurricane 2025.

What we know:

The non-tropical area with low pressure is about 700 miles northeast of the islands of the Northern Leeward and causes strong winds and large, unorganized storms, officers said on Monday in a special tropical weather outlook at 12:20 p.m.

What is the difference between tropical depression, a tropical storm, the hurricane and the great hurricane?

Tropical systems receive ratings on the hurricane windskala Saffir-Simpson-Die exclusively on the maximum persistent wind speed of a storm. It does not make a storm surge, precipitation or tornados, which could contribute to the destruction of a storm.

With increasing wind speeds of a tropical system (and the storm becomes stronger), as it is defined, changes. A “big” hurricane develops when he reaches cat. 3, 4 or 5 status.

  • Tropical depression: A tropical system with maximum continued winds of 38 miles per hour and typically consists of unorganized thunderstorms.
  • Tropical storm: a tropical system that is better organized and has a maximum of continued winds of 39 to 73 miles per hour.
  • Category 1 Hurricane: 74-95 miles per hour persistent wind
  • Category 2 Hurricane: 96-110 miles per hour persistent wind
  • Category 3 main hurricane: 111-129 miles per hour persistent wind
  • Category 4 main hurricane: 130-156 miles per hour persistent wind
  • Category 5 main hurricane: 157 miles per hour or more persistent winds

How do you prepare for the hurricane season?

It is never too early to prepare for the upcoming hurricane season or an emergency. It is important to have a plan to have ways to communicate and maintain emergency information, save and protect important documents, medication and additional food and water.
