Black lung consciousness day in the West Virginia Capitol

Charleston, W.Va. – On Thursday, March 20, 2025, Kohlbergen and their families will gather from the coal-producing communities in West Virginia in the Capitol Building for Black Lung Awareness Day. Organizations such as the United Minen Workers of America, the Black Lung Association, Appalachian Voices, the Appalachian Citizens' Law Center and more will come together to support themselves for more advantages, protection and awareness of the black lung disease and its ongoing effects on the state. This event coincides with HCR 72 and announced on March 20, 2025 as a “day of black lung awareness” in West Virginia in order to “appreciate those who take part in coal worker -pneumoconiosis and reduce the risk of a black lung disease at carbon fry.”

When: March 20, 2025 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: West Virginia State Capitol, lower rotunda
Why: To work for increased advantages, protection and awareness of black lung diseases among state legislators and the public.
