The Citizens' Academy of the Redding Fire Department offers historical insights and practical training

The participants in the first Citizens' Academy of the Redding Fire Department experience a life in the fire station and spend time with firefighters at the historical station One in the city center. The station, built in 1939, is rich in history and offers fire brigade masts and original tiles in the toilet.

Cole Prokopow, a young fireman and tour guide, expressed his appreciation for the historical elements of the station. “We have a lot of cool older things,” said Prokopow. “We have a lot of old memorabilia and culture from which it came [station] 1 here. We have a few firefighters, it's cool. We definitely have an older aspect to keep traditions here at 1. “

During the academy, the participants experienced a real emergency reaction when a call came with breath difficulties. The man was taken to the hospital.

The academy also included the training of a new elevator system to free people who are trapped in vehicles or under vehicles. The participants learned the differences between a fire engine that has no water on board, but a ladder can be comprised and can be connected with a water source, and a fire engine that carries 750 gallons and can pump from a hydrant. Both vehicles work with a minimal three -person crew: a captain, an engineer and a fireman.

The academy will continue a session in station on Wednesday evening, where the participants promise a practical experience that they may be moist.
