Emergency management departments discuss tornado security -tips

Louisville, Ky. – Kentucky was on a high alert after Tornados torn through several US cities at the weekend. When the state enters the storm season, it is important to be prepared and have security plans.

What you need to know

  • People can prepare for large storms by having security plans
  • When tornado warnings are exhibited
  • The departments of Louisville and Lexington Emergency Management have both options for people to receive weather notifications

Emergency management departments throughout the Commonwealth play an important role in keeping residents secure in extreme weather events.

“We bring information and we help to reach the right people,” said Emily Fay, the public information officer for Lexington Emergency Management.

The departments also offer the municipalities resources for security tips. Jody Meiman from Louisville Emergency Management and Services said that people should be prepared before storms are even hit.

“You can create security kits and security kits at home or travel security kits,” said Meiman. “You can recognize these things in advance.”

Meiman said people should have a security plan in the event of a tornado.

“You shouldn't wait for the disaster to affect it and then create a plan,” said Meiman.

The security plans include determining a safe location.

“The best place to be somewhere without a window during a tornado, preferably underground, in a basement,” said Fay. “If you don't have a basement, you want to go to a small interior without a window. Usually it is like a bathroom or a hall cabinet, and you can take on a mattress or blankets or anything heavier there if you can harm at home. “

For people who are outside or on the go, do not go under a transfer or bridge. According to Fema, it is safer to find a low, flat place.

“If a tornado comes on your way, you want to be as low as possible,” said Fay. “This first floor, some places, have a closed staircase without a window. This is a good place. Friends with someone on the first floor. See whether your apartment complex or dormitory has an office or a place that everyone can protect. “

Tornados can take place at any time. As soon as a tornado warning has been output, pay attention to the warning and stay up to date through the news, the phone or even the weather radio devices.

The residents of Louisville find a banner on the Louisville Metro Government website, where you can register to receive emergency warnings.

Lexington's residents can go to the website of their emergency management department in order to register for “Lexalter” in order to obtain weather notifications.
