Southern Miss Football opens spring practice

Hattiesburg, Miss. (WDAM) – In just four months, the head coach of Southern Miss, Charles Huff, gave the football list a greater plastic operation.

In 2024 the Golden Eagles finished 1-11.

At the beginning of a new phase, coach Huff and his brand new employees brought over 41 players from the transfer portal this off -season to rebuild the team.

Although there is a lot of new things to build with chemistry, Huff says that this is not the immediate focus when the spring camp begins.

“This first phase in which we build the person,” said Huff. “We are not in a team yet because there is reality that some of these boys will not be here in autumn.

What does that mean? Teach each one in the program. What it will need to be a member of this team to develop. I don't think you can start building a team if you haven't taught boys what it takes to be in a team.

You did not teach boys how to prepare, you didn't bring boys how to play the football game, you didn't bring boys discipline, you did not teach boys.

Because when I bring them these things, this is America, this is a free country. If you don't like discipline, you have the opportunity to go elsewhere. “

The offensive coordinator Blake Anderson has returned to the USM for the first time since his head coach Larry Fedora.

Anderson was previously head coach in Utah State, where he was released last July due to suspected school injuries.

Anderson spoke about being hired by USM in a persistent legal dispute.

“Without saying much because we are in the middle of a legal dispute.

“One of the reasons why I am so grateful to Jeremy and Joe Paul and all the people involved.

Probably the biggest for me when I came back was just my time here. I saw what coach Huff did at Marshall. I knew what kind of support he would get from the community. “

The second linebacker Chris Jones is one of the few players of this year's team, who was part of the 1-11 campaign last season.

In just a few months with Charles Huff, Jones described the difference in the preparations of Huff and the leadership of his employee.

“It is much better in my opinion,” said Jones.

“It is much better because I say I actually learn football.

Last year not to beat anyone, but we didn't really have much discipline in the field or outside the field. I saw how Huff came in with his new employees and only changed me that it was different for me because I had to prepare for it that it had no discipline last year.

But that's so big now. Managers like the leaders who make them known every day of practice. Even if we only run in such a way that you are conditioning such things, you have to increase and be a leader. ”

The USM Football Spring training ends on Saturday, April 12th.
