The chief of police from Decatur, Shane Brandel

Decatur, IL – the chief of police from Decatur, Shane Brandel, will retire in May after serving at the Decatur Police Department for 28 years.
Chief Brandel came to DPD in April 1997 and worked in various units and all three departments of the department during his term. He was assigned to the Detective in 2000 and rose against Sergeant in 2005 in 2005 and acted as deputy chief of police in 2016. He was appointed police chief in July 2021.
“Shane was an outstanding police chief in a demanding time to be in law enforcement authorities,” said Tim Gleason, City Manager from Decatur. “Our community became safer under his leadership and leaves the department in a better place.
Chief Brandel is the proud of these achievements:
Improved service for the community by modernizing the department through strategic implementation of advanced technology, including improved devices and software.
Restructured the department to adapt to contemporary police practices and to improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness.
Strengthening the training programs for the further training of the civil servants in order to ensure continued professional development and willingness to develop the challenges of public security.
Improved internal and external communication to promote more transparency, cooperation and commitment.
Developed and implemented provision strategies that maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the representatives in the community.

Brandel will retire on May 9, 2025. A new chief of police will be appointed by the city administrator in the near future.
