Justice is denied for most shooting victims in Chicago

Nobody expects the Chicago police to solve every crime in our big city. The dark, small number of arrests, which are bound with non-fatal shootings, which were described in a Sonntimes examination at the weekend, have probably produced alarm bells with many citizens who are concerned about violence.

In cases, more than 19,000 people who have been injured in shootings since 2018 were made a poor arrest.

In 2024 alone there were 141 arrests at 2,300 non -fatal shootings – a “clearance” rate of 6%. This was recently reported by Andy Grimm and Tom Schuba by The Sun-Times with the support of the freelance journalist Andy Boyle and the WBEZ editor of the data projects, Alden Loury.

Most cases that are “closed” without arrest usually take place in some of the most violent quarters in Chicago, whereby the problem is maintained because suspects remain on the freely, are free, their weapons and injured – or kill – more people.

Sacrifice like Tom Wagner, who was shot on the west side during carjacking four years ago, wonders where his justice is. The rest of us should ask him and others who repeatedly call the police for updates, just to find out that nobody actively examined their shootings.

Detectives are saturated with an unmanageable number of cases compared to their colleagues in other big cities. This is partly the reason why 80% or more of non -fatal shootings “suspended” every year and a little less than half of all cases are suspended within 30 days.

“Even if they every like how how [it was] A murder, there is only no time for it, ”said a detective in retirement.

There is no question that witnesses, including victims who are not interested in working with the police, intensify such challenges.

The investigation with around 1,500 non -fatal shootings since 2018 has been dropped because the victims did not want to offer the officials. It is hardly any news that distrust of police officers runs deep in some districts. In some municipalities there are still contempt for decades of illegal convictions when men and women had to leave in prison for crimes they had not committed.

It leads to a vicious circle: someone is shot, but does not work with the police. Nobody is charged and the perpetrator stays on the street.

It will require more efforts by police officers and victims to solve these crimes.

“The first time you talk to [the victim or a witness] The shooter could be right there at the crime scene, ”said a detective to the Sun-Times reporters [victim] Could just be crazy or fearful.

“You don't expect us to do something.

“And maybe you really can't help you with this case.

Walls can and must be dismantled to obtain important information.

Here you will find something else that could help: a note from Denver, our police department, this year 58 detectives in the city assigned to focus exclusively on shooting examinations.

After Denver implemented his “weapons -storm team”, The Fast Unit in 2020, the release rate for non -fatal shootings rose from 17% to 64% per year later. We can only hope that a similar pilot program can increase the Clearance rate of Chicago here.

To survive such a stuffing experience – being shot – is hard enough. Knowing that the culprit was not caught and never punished only contributes to this terrible trauma.
