The first four are their own peculiarity for the overarching March madness: it takes place on a college campus and consists of the four automatic qualification players and the four lowest seed teams who fight for a place in a large dance.

The first four have created some madness and legendary action lines over the years, especially with VCU and UCLA, both of which from the first four to the last four in 2011 and 2021. Elsewhere, other teams have won from winning their first four game to a No. 1 seed (such as Fairleigh Dickinson via Purdue in the first round of the tournament 2023).
