City clean up after St. Patrick’s Day Parade

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – In just a matter of hours squares along the parade route, like Chippewa Square, were transformed from being the center of the celebration back to quiet public spaces.

In the past, some squares have been covered in trash after the parade ended- causing city officials to once again put an emphasis on keeping the celebrations green and clean.

After the parade, the seven squares along the route closed for a couple hours for cleaning. Then overnight, the city says street sweepers and cleaning crews were out in full force.

Tuesday we saw crews taking down barricades and no parking signs.

“The risk is always having all the beautiful plant life trampled. The city does a good job of protecting all of that it. It’s immediate. Once the parade’s done, it’s rolled up, cleaned up, everything’s back to normal,” said Savannah resident Dallas Burgess.

The cleanup efforts mark the end of the St. Patrick’s Day season.

We heard from Chatham EMS officials who tell us that from Friday afternoon to early Tuesday morning- they responded to 71 calls in the festival area and parade route with 35 people needing to go to the hospital.
