Baltimore, Maryland (WJZ) – Adnan Syed, whose murder case was recorded in the Podcast “Series” in 2014, returned to a courtroom in Baltimore on Wednesday when judge was considering whether he should reduce his prison sentence after the juvenile restoration Act.

After the hearing, lawyers said that the court would share a written decision on the size evaluation. No specific timeline was given.

The 43-year-old Syed was more than 20 years in prison before his ex-girlfriend's death and Woodlawn High Classmate Hae Min Lee was cleared in 1999 in September 2022.

His conviction was later restored and stopped by the Supreme Court of Maryland in August 2024, whereby the Lee family family was insufficiently known about the Vacatur hearing.

Syed was originally sentenced to life imprisonment and 30 years.

Syed's team called six witnesses at the hearing on Wednesday – from his brother, friends and experts – until his growth and conviction of the judge he deserves, which he deserves.

“We are confident that the court will see what we see that he is a changing demonstration of a positive and contributing member of society, that he has spent his entire detention and has shown in the past two years that he has been worth a conviction reduction,” said Syed's lawyer Erica Suter.

David Sanford, who represents Lee's family, criticized the celebrity status that Syed Syed has, and began with the “series” podcast 2014 and at the same time pointed to legal challenges for his conviction that were not successful.

“Absolutely Nothing, not a Popular Podcast, Not an HBO Documentary, Not Worldwide Press Coverage, Not the Support of Mr. Syed's Family and Friends, Not the State's Wholly Unsupported Motion to Vacate, Not the Cultural Hysteria Surround This and Not the Zealous and Compassionate Defense BY Mr. Syed's Experience Legal Team the Essential Fact that Mr. Syed Remains Convicted of Premedited Murder Due to Overwelming Evidence that Stood Strong against creative legal challenges and extensive public comments, ”said Sanford.

Upon request, the lawyers from Syed submitted an application to reduce Adnan Syed's prison sentence in December 2024, in which he was asked to reduce his punishment under the Youth Restauration Act, a law in Maryland, the persons who were asked for at least 20 years of prison for crimes to search for a modified punishment. Syed was at the time of the murder of Lee 17.

The State of Baltimore, Ivan Bates, confirmed his support for a reduced judgment in court on Wednesday. During the hearing, he described Syed's record as one of the best he saw from someone who has been detained for more than 20 years.

In court, Suter said that all Syed pose a telephone -related violation during his detainees, while since he had been released in 2022 he has no crime.

“I recognize the complexity and sensitivity of this case. I hope that this comprehensive review and my final decision bring all parties involved, ”said Bates.

According to the Baltimore banner, Syed does not have to return to prison if judge Jennifer B. Schiffer agrees. However, his convictions for murder, robbery, kidnapping and incorrect detention remain.

Lee Family's lawyer argues against a reduced prison sentence during the hearing on Wednesday, David Sanford, the Lee family's lawyer, argued that 7 out of eleven factors of the law on the restoration of youth jurisdiction indicates that Syed should not receive a reduced prison sentence.

One of the factors that the court takes into account within the framework of the Restoration Act is the age of the suspect at the time of crime.

According to Sanford, Syed was 17 years and seven months old at the time of murder.

Sanford pointed to other similar cases in which a suspect was a few months away from his 18th birthday and argued that the court should take this into account when deciding on the sale.

Sanford also said that the violent nature of the crime and the lack of repentance by Syed should be taken into account.

“For this factor, Mr. Syed's lack of repentance and refusal is to take responsibility for the brutal murder of Ms. Lee despite the overwhelming evidence of his guilt,” he said during the trial.

He also argued that Syed's rehabilitation and family circumstances should also be taken into account.

“Evidence of mitigating factors have never been presented, which illuminate the light and make Mr. Syed more likeable … Mr. Syed's own submission claims: “He grew up in a stable and loving home that prioritized hard work and education,” said Sanford.

According to Sanford, the dynamics for the release of Syed were “created” in a podcast that was created from a one -sided view.

“Lord. Syed's status as a media personality caused the pressure to leave his prison sentence and released him from prison. In this attitude he was looking for a conviction,” said Sanford.

“Social media cannot take the place of the judicial system,” he added.

The application for the application for Syed's conviction, which was withdrawn on Tuesday, said his office has brought her application to Adnan Syed's conviction, which means that the conviction is regardless of whether Syed's punishment is reduced.

Bates said that the decision of the former public prosecutor, Marilyn Mosby, to clear Syed, was based on “false and misleading statements that undermine the integrity of the judicial process”.

“I did not make the decision to easily withdraw this application, but it is necessary to preserve the credibility of my office and maintain the public's trust in the judicial system,” he said in a press conference after the hearing on Wednesday.

“The dishes have cleared the condemnation of Adnan Syed three times. He saw his freedom for a crime three times that he did not commit, ”said Syed's lawyer in response. “The state's lawyer misunderstood it. His decision to withdraw the application of his office to the conviction of Adnan ignores the injustices on which this conviction was founded. We will continue to fight to remove his name through all legal paths available to him, ”said Suter.

The murder of Hae Min Lee Hae Min Lee, an 18-year-old student of the high school, was missing in January 1999. Her body was found in Leakin Park in Baltimore City weeks later.

In 2000 Syed was convicted of murder of Lee. More than 20 years later, in 2022, he was released from prison after a judge left his conviction.

The courts then stopped the conviction of Syed after Lee's family argued that they had not given enough announcement to take part in the hearing.

Syed's case received national attention when he was presented in the first season of the “Serial” podcast in 2014 in the perception of True Crime Podcast. He was later also seen in the “not mentioned” podcast “uncleded”.
