Alex Ovechkin Tore Tracker: 'The Great Eight' is eleven away from Wayne Gretzky's all -time record of 894

Alex Ovechkin scored goal No. 884.

Washington Capitals' superstar, Alex Ovechkin, is approaching an NHL record record that many considered to be unbreakable.

The 39-year-old Ovechkin is located in a feast of Wayne Gretzky's all-time-noor record of 894. “The Great” scored his final goal on March 29, 1999.

Ovechkin entered the NHL season 2024-25 with 853 career-NHL goals. He started the season with 15 goals in 18 games. But after suffering a broken fibula in November, he missed five weeks. This free time had no influence on his skills in the goal: in his first five games, he scored four goals of injuries.

During a 3-1 defeat against Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday, Ovechkin achieved career ethet gate No. 884 late in the third period when the capitals tried a comeback.

Ovechkin sits 11 goals from the over control of Gretzky, with 22 games still playing.

“It is only a matter of time whether it is late this year, early next year, whenever,” said Gretzky to NHL.com at the beginning of this season about Ovechkin's chances to break his record. “I mean, he is a great player. He is a great scorer.”

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in December that he would pursue Ovechkin if he is within four or five goals of the record, with Gretzky accompanying him.

Ovechkin will continue his chase for Gretzkys Mark on Monday against the Ottawa senators.

We will follow Ovechkin's races to 894 goals and beyond.
