Bangor, Maine Homeowners fight against flooding through melting snow

Bangor house owners are exposed to costly water leaks, while warmer temperatures melt snow and ice.

Bangor, Maine – with warmer temperatures that melt snow and ice in Maine, many homeowners are faced with an unexpected problem: water leaks.

From basements to roofs, snow and rain seep into houses and cause costly damage.

Carol King, who lived in Bangor, learned on the hard tour of how quickly the snow melt can become a problem.

“Suddenly I put my foot down and I feel how my slide gets wet,” said King, remembering the moment when she discovered two centimeters of water in her basement. The floods not only soaked their things, but also prevented them from going to work.

“I had to devote my energy to the restoration of objects, make calls and were present for the workers,” she said.

The culprit? A combination of melting snow and the latest rain that saturates the floor.

Jason Sear, owner of Penobscot Cleaning Services, said these conditions lead to an increase in the cellar leaks.

“As soon as the water does not go through the unsorted soil, it leans back through its foot lines, concrete cellars and drains.

Water damage is also not limited to basement. Armon Dalon from Dalon Construction said he saw more homeowners with leaks from their roofs.

“It is a biggest test of a house and it is always where water is on the roof – penetrations about skylights, chimneys and pipes,” said Dalon.

Dalon added that dripping water and damaged shingles can be some of the simplest signs that you have to pay attention to, but even a flawless roof can be vulnerable.

“A brand new roof cannot be installed properly, so it seems to be waterproof, but it is what is underneath and how it has been put together, which can lead to leaks,” said Dalon.

While LECKS can be expensive, both Dalon and Sear can say that preventive maintenance can save homeowners time and money.

“Correct insulation can prevent heat from fleeing through the roof, which causes ice,” said Dalon.

“Make sure that your snow disappears from your house, make sure that your drains work,” added Sear.

Sear said that if you notice a leak, his team is only a call away.

“Our goal is to secure as many of her things as possible at the end of the day,” added Sear.
