Bayern Munich goalkeeper Grohs has started her first start since treatment for tumor

Munich (AP) goalkeeper Maria-Luisa “Mala” Grohs made the best of her first start for Bayern Munich since his return from treatment for a malignant tumor.

She could not prevent Bayern from losing 2-0 against goals from Tabitha Chawinga and Melchie Dumornay, but her performance will give the Bavarian team the hope before the second leg in Lyon on March 26.

“It was really something special,” Grohs told Dazn after the game. “I am so happy that I have not expected in the past few months.

At Grohs, the tumor was diagnosed in October. Bayern made the diagnosis public in the following month and was operated on in December.

“I had no idea where the trip would go,” she said last month in an interview with the Westfälische -Nachrichten newspaper. “I had no experience with cancer in my immediate circle.”

Grohs worked on her comeback by playing for Bavaria's second team before she got the game on Tuesday.

“She did exactly what we expected – of course not the punishment, but Mala is stable.
