Bowling green football job profile: pluses, minus and candidates to replace Scot Loeffler

The bowling green job is open. Scot Loeffler announced on Friday that he accepted coaching coaching job at the Philadelphia Eagles and left the Falcons with a coaching search for an inappropriate time.

Loeffler went 27-41 in six seasons, but brought the falcons to three consecutive Bowl games (all losses). BG's 6-2 record in Mac Play last season was the best under Loefflers watch. Now the school has to find a new trainer after the day and shortly before the start of the spring exercises.

How good is the bowling green job? Which names could get in the mix? How much will timing affect the search? Based on discussions with industry sources, you will find a testimony to the job and the potential candidates you have to watch.

Recent history/tradition: c

The last decade of the BG football was difficult, but here was success. Dave Clawson and Dino Babers led the Falcons from 2013-15 to three consecutive Mac East Division titles, including two Mac championships in 2013 and 2015. However, both went for power 4 jobs, and the Falcons have struggled since then. Bowling Green has achieved three consecutive Bowl games, but that came after six consecutive seasons. Since 2015, the falcons have not won more than seven games in one season.

Outlook on the field: D+

All-America Tight End Harold Fannin Jr., who goes to the NFL. The top recipient Malcolm Johnson Jr. and the quarterback Connor Bazelak have no justification, and Terion Stewart's top return switched to Virginia Tech. This is life in the Mac these days. The Falcons added 15 transfers to five of them from Power 4 programs, but it is difficult to predict what the squad will look like, especially since the upcoming spring sports window could create more uncertainty for squads.

Money matters: D

Loeffler's $ 582,000 was the second lowest in the Mac and the fifth lowest in FBS under public school jobs. According to the Sportico database, BG was sixth in the Mac in the football editions in 2023. Name, image and similarity efforts were not too prominent in the Mac, and it is unclear how much BG has to spend on taking players with players if the house accounting is approved. The Sebo Athletic Center is attached to the Doyt L. Perry Stadium and offers a 42,500 square meter training and meeting center for all sports from Bowling Green. The Perry Field House offers an inner practice.

Toledo defensive coordinator Vince Kehren was the head coach of Mount Union from 2013-19 and won two national titles of Division III. The 48-year-old knows Ohio through and through and he has regularly produced one of the three best defenses in the Mac since his arrival in 2020.

Coach can win here in the past, but coaching in the Mac has never been harder in the transfer portal, which is one reason why Loeffler went. Timing makes this job very difficult to predict, especially for seated head coaches. The falcons have not paid off as competitive and appealing as it should be. Nevertheless, Loeffler showed that annual Bowl games are fair expectation. But the next trainer could try to hold a squad together in the spring portal.
