Brush fire near Homestead now contained 80%

Miami-Dade County, Fla. – A brushfire east of Homestead was contained 80% on Saturday, compared to 60% the day before.

The fire broke out in the area of Southwest 117th Avenue and the 336th Street.

“It is currently in a good place,” said Kevin Macewen, manager of the Florida Forest Service Everglades District,. “We hope to have completed that in a few days.”

According to the Florida Forest Service, about 850 acres of the brush burned. It used helicopters and water from a nearby channel to pour the fire over.

The forest service has deliberately set the so -called “burnout brandy”, burning brush to extinguish a fuel area for the fire and prevent it from spreading.

Firefighters were hindered by the soft ground, causing them preventing devices near the fire.

“Our equipment when we sent out there to put the fire out there, our all tracks and our bulldozer, they remained firm,” said Macewen. “So that was a whole company to get this equipment out.”

The officers of the forest service said they do not expect the fire to threaten structures. Dry conditions and windy weather have contributed to spreading.

They said a fire like this could actually be healthy for the country and clear the undergrowth that could be fuel for future fires. But they still try to keep it content.

Officials expect an active fire season.
