Catholics in the Philadelphia region mark the beginning of Lent and pray for Pope Francis

Philadelphia (WPVI) – At the church services on Wednesday there were special considerations for the leader of the church, Pope Francis when he stayed in the hospital.

In the basilica of St. Peter and Paul, ashes are exhibited in a sign of death and rebirth.

At the same time, special prayers are offered for Pope Francis. The 88-year-old fights for double pneumonia and complications. He has been hospitalized for 20 days.

“Our holy father Pope Francis continues to fight with his health, so we keep him in our hearts today,” said Philadelphia Archbishop Nelson Perez.

In the past three weeks and on a holy day like ash Wednesday, Catholics have prayed for the Pope around the world and here at home.

“We certainly believe in miracles and pray for him,” said Joe Rose from Newtown Square.

The Vatican reports that Francis is vigilant and receives oxygen. Today he was offered ashes and community from his hospital room.

In Havertown, Father Kevin Gallagher runs services in the St. Denis Church: “We know from our own friends and our family that this is a very critical time in his life, and we ask the Lord that he relieves his suffering.”

Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. For observers, it is a time for reflection, prayer, reversal and renewal.

“40 days prayer, fasting and alms. It is a time that is very aware of the needs of our brothers and sisters,” said Father Gallagher.

The Vatican says that Francis had changed all day and rests. In the morning he was able to call Father Gabriel Romanelli, pastor of the Holy Family in Gaza.
