CBP uses biometric technology to identify criminals

Laredo, Tex. (KGNS) – Thousands of people come through the entry ports to the USA every day. For this reason, customs and border protection (CBP) used the biometric technology to identify people.

If you come through land to the USA, a CBP field or an operation officer, like those at the Juarez Lincoln Bridge, call for your documentation.

As soon as you have put your information into the computer, travelers look a small camera that takes a picture of them, asks where they come from and what is the reason behind their trip.

Within a few minutes, the official should be able to identify the person who comes into the country.

According to Rick Pauza with CBP, “we use the biometry to identify their identity and citizenship. We also use this when we encounter aufreposter travel documents and when we meet the desired people. “

This biometric facial recognition is used in all entrance ports, and after almost five years it has become an essential instrument to categorize, store and finally to categorize criminals.

In Laredo, the technology was able to identify 35-year-old Juan Geronimo Hernandez for an arrest warrant against a suspected sexual crime with a minor from the Sheriff's office from Webb County.

Another person was the 51-year-old Paciano Castillo Hernandez with an arrest warrant due to alleged severe sexual attacks by a child from San Antonio.

Many criminals such as Juan Geronimo Hernandez and Paciano Castillo Hernandez were stopped in various entry stations such as Del Rio and Progressso.

The Laredo Field Office, which covers South Texas, reports that around 2,400 people from all parts of the country are arrested per financial year. These are about seven people a day who are arrested at the border for previous crimes.

These security efforts were passed by the congress in 1996, with the creation of a biographical entrance and exit system being prescribed.

The system became a prerequisite for the agency after September 11th and travelers, it is an additional step for them before they enter the USA

Over 200 million identities are inscribed in the database, which is connected to the entry sports. This simply facilitates the process of identifying people who are sought throughout the district.

In addition, this biometry is used when they travel on aircraft, boats and vehicles, and CBP continues to work with other law enforcement authorities to secure the entry ports.
