Crews Battle Fire in Sawmill in Columbus County

Columbus County, NC (ET) – The crews continue to fight for a fire at a sawmill in Columbus County.

According to ACME Delco-Riegelwood (ADR) fire chief Steve Camlin, the crews reacted to reports on a fire at the West Frazier sawmill at 1:45 p.m.

“Initial units that arrived on site reported on large fires that were located in wooden piles with sawdust and chips, which were fed with strong winds about 20 miles per hour and over it and spread quickly,” explained fire chief Steve Camlin in an e -mail to Wect.

According to Camlin, manual lines and a tanker shuttle were not used with any hydrants due to the area.

“Strong winds have the fire more towards the unburned scrap wood, the fire intensified and endangered structures,” said Camlin. “Additional help came from all over Columbus County, including the Columbus County Tanker Task Force, Bladen County units. Most or all fire departments from Columbus County are used here. ”

Camlin says that the cause of the fire is unknown at that time.

“At that time, units are still on site to suppress the fire,” said Camlin.

WECT will continue to update this story as soon as further information is available.
