The Emory Police Department (EPD) replied on February 22nd at 12:30 p.m. in a blackmail attempt in the Eagle Hall at around 12:30 p.m. to take a blackmail attempt. The student informed the EPD that he used to report an Instagram account in the evening in which he had sexually explicit photos of himself. The person who had reported the student then asked for money and threatened to share the photos with others if the student had not met.

According to Shoemaker, the student still reported the Instagram account when EPD arrived. EPD received some information about the account and advised the student to hire messages and block the user. The victim decided to remain anonymous so that EPD cannot disclose the information collected via the account.

EPD has accessed screenshots that document the conversation and sufficient information in order to refer the matter to the private detective unit for further investigations. The student gave the account no money, which, according to Shoemaker, made the incident a criminal extortion attempt as an active blackmail. The victim decided not to advance an examination, so EPD did not charge the other account for further information.
