Dane Co. Emergency management, UW Madison scientists offer tips before storming

Madison, Wisconsin (WMTV) -Since the emergency management crews are busy preparing for potential storms, a UW Madison -scientist has also observed the forecast in order to examine its effects.

Shane Hubbard, research scientist from UW Madison, said that studying these storms can help us to better prepare for the future.

“We take so much information when these things happen,” said Hubbard.

For the time being, Hubbard said some of the most important tips on a flashlight at hand and storing an eye for emergency weather warnings.

According to Hubbard, people and their houses should also prepare for potential fires.

“One of the things that will happen in such really strong wind events of thunderstorms is that they can have power lines,” said Hubbard: “And these lines can then start to arise and cause fire so that they only have to be very aware of. Therefore, you should be aware of when the storms come through and that you carefully ensure that nothing of the kind will affect your home and property. “

Andrew Beckett, Dane County's public information officer, said that the crews had worked closely with the national weather service to create a response plan.

Beckett said they also focused on promoting consciousness so that people can react quickly and have protection if necessary.

While Dane County Tornado sirens existed, Beckett said that these warnings are usually designed for people outdoors. So if a storm strikes overnight, it is important to have several options to get storm warnings.

“If you are in your house at night with a storm system that will probably get through at night, you would like to make sure that you enable things like wireless emergency warnings on your smartphone and have a NOAA radio in your house,” said Beckett. “Make sure you adapt to the local media and look at the reporting that may point out where these storms move.”

Officials said it was also recommended to avoid windows and to look for protection in a basement. If your home does not have a basement, a ground floor is best. People who live in mobile homes should consider finding an alternative accommodation during the storm, said Beckett.

If you damage your house, Dane County officials say to report it to your local community.

Alliant Energy said that you are also working on spreading awareness of the avoidance of downed current lines. If you have one or have a failure, you can report it to 1-800-255-4268.
