Why are there three different opening days in baseball this season?

Here is what you need to know about the opening of the 2025 MLB season later this month, an opening that includes two teams in Japan in two official MLB games of the regular season before the rest of the league begins your season and another game one day after the remaining MLB teams.

When does the 2025 mlb season begin?

The regular season of 2025 MLB begins on Tuesday, March 18, when the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs play in the Tokyo Dome in Japan.

The teams will compete in a second game on Wednesday, March 19, in the same place.

Both games should start at 3:10 a.m. PDT (5:10 a.m.).

When is 2025 opening day for other MLB teams?

Twenty-six 28 MLB teams are to open their seasons in 2025 with games on Thursday, March 27th.

The only two teams that are not planned on March 27th? The Colorado Rockies and Tampa Bay Rays, which are supposed to open their seasons on Friday, March 28th in George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa.

The Rays are supposed to play their regular home games in this area, the spring training home of the New York Yankees, this season after Tropicana Field was damaged in Hurricane Milton.
