Day of the percussion brings “Marimba in America”.

On March 8, the Ministry of Music at the University of Arkansas, the Community Music School and the U of a college chapter of the Percussive Arts Society are proud to present a day of percussion. An event that is dedicated to Percussion instruments, musicians, history and composers. This year's topic “Marimba in America's” will bring lecturers and actors from the USA, Colombia and Mexico to Fayetteeville.

The guest lecturers include Marimba Sol de Chiapas, a Kansas City Group founded by Laurence Kapain in 1988. Undertook for the authentic performance practice and the spirit of the Marimba, which belongs throughout Mesoamerica, have an active schedule for services, records and multi-cultural workshops. The ensemble has taken Mexico on tour as the guests of the Mexican government and also enjoys enriching its audience in various local, national and international event locations and formats and bringing thousands of listeners of the Mexican Marimba.

Héctor Javier Tascón has focused on studying percussion and on the traditional music of the South Pacific region of Colombia. The Marimbas, the Curraulao rhythm, the traditional Colombian legends and the Afro-Columbian dances, are the focus of his interests as artists and researchers.

Wilson Tovar is a professor of percussion at the Conservatory Adolfo Mejia, where he heads research projects and curriculum reforms in the Percussion area. He served as director of the Timpanists and section leader at the Orquesta Sinfónica de Bolívar and worked with the Orquesta Filarmonia de Madrid.

Percombia Trio consists of Hector Tascón, Wilson Tovar and the trainer of the University of Arkansas, Fernando Valencia. Her current project includes the elaboration of Cimcam's “Perspectivas Sonoras”, the expansion of the Colombian music repertoire for percussion trio, compositions for trio and string orchestra as well as implementations of clinics and workshops.

The event is completed with a performance of the Percussion Ensemble of the University of Arkansas with professors Chal Ragsdale, Fernando Valencia and Chris Scherer.

Registration for the event begins at 9:15 a.m. in the Faulkner Performing Arts Center. A program for the event can be found on the website of the music department.
