Desantis wants to reverse the laws of Florida weapons

Tallahassee, Fla. – Governor Ron Desantis urges to reset the most important provisions of weapons laws in Florida, including the reversal of the red flag laws and the reduction of the minimum age to buy a long weapon from 21 to 18.

In his state speech, Desantis said: “Take a look back in cases where legislation may have been adopted in recent years.”

The proposed changes would reverse parts of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Public Safety Act, a pioneering law that was issued in March 2018 after the Parkland School massacre.

The law that was passed by a deeply conservative legislator and signed by that time. Rick Scott included arms restrictions and laws to the red flag that were used 15,000 times to temporarily remove weapons from people who were regarded as direct danger.

“We worked a lot – the legislators – both sides of the aisle. They have compromised and chose things they could live with, ”said Debbi Hixon, chairman of the Broward County School Board, whose husband Chris Hixon was killed in the mass shooting of MSD 2018. She was later elected to the Broward County School Board as part of her advocacy for safer schools.

Other Parkland parents expressed their opposition to reverse the law.

Lori Alhadeff, whose daughter Alyssa was killed in the 2018 MSD shootout, and Tony Montalto, who founded Stand with Parkland after his daughter Gina was killed in the same shootout, wrote 10 messages from Tallahasee that the state did it right. These pragmatic laws have contributed to ensuring students and teachers in our state. “

Ryan Petty, whose daughter Alaina was also killed in the same shootout, has changed his attitude towards the red flag laws.

“I had a change in the heart when you want how I learned more,” said Petty, who works in the MSD Public Safety Commission. “I think we have better what is going on, especially in the area of protection of schools in Florida.”
