Detroit Tigers' former prospective top prospect impresses in the first spring training start

The Detroit Tigers are preparing for the 2025 season, in which they hope to build dynamics on the immense they generated in 2024 by making the playoffs and beating the Houston Astros in the American League Wild Card series.

To do this, the tiger members of the starting report will need a deep group behind the reigning American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal.

A candidate to make these contributions is Casey Mize, the first overall selection of Auburn in the MLB draft 2018. Mize, now 27 years old, has established itself as a worthy hurricular of the Major League. But he didn't make the jump the Tigers hoped when he used the top election to bring it in.

Mize and the organization both hope that jump will come and his performance in his first appearance as a spring training on Sunday looks like the first data point to indicate that he could.

Mize stood in a New York Yankees cast with regular guests such as Jazz Chisholm Jr., Paul Goldschmidt, Cody Bellinger and Anthony Polpe.

While the success is beautiful, the most encouraging aspect of what Mize showed on Sunday was the overwhelming speed of his fast ball with four sets.

Mize only threw the two innings, but for the fifth inning he had the four fastest offers in competition, including a maximum speed of 98.1 miles per hour.

If Mize can say this strength, this could be a distinction factor from its 2024 -self, which gave up a 4.49 ERA in 22 appearances.

According to Baseball Savant data, Mize had an average of 95.5 miles per hour per hour, according to Baseball Savant. While this is still a strong number, it is by no means the summit to which it is capable of, and it led to bad results for its main offer, and against the operations of battery with a clip of 0.294 against the field while swing and only missed 20.7% of the time.

If Mize can maintain the warmth on this field, he can play more with the timing, and the rackets will have difficulties to hit the increased speed. This should lead to more strikes, fewer barrels against and a better overall result for him.

The tigers do not need a mize to implement them in ACE caliber, and Jack Flaherty again in the wrinkle, but the team looks much more impressive when he appears like a high-end-in-step starter.
