Donald Trump orders a new tariff examination of the US copper imports | Trump Administration

Donald Trump opened another front in his attack on global trade standards on Tuesday and ordered a new study of the possible tariffs for copper imports to rebuild the US production of a metal for electric vehicles, military hardware, semiconductor and a wide range of consumer goods.

Trump, the thwarts what his advisors dominate as a step of China, dominate the global copper market This Trump used in his first term to impose 25% worldwide tariffs on steel and aluminum.

An official of the White House said that a potential tariff rate would be determined by the examination, and added that Trump preferred the tariffs to quotas.

The White House trade advisor, Peter Navarro, said the investigation would quickly be completed “in Trump”.

Navarro claimed China used by state subsidies and economic influences to gain control of global copper production, as is now dominated by steel and aluminum production.

However, the federal states are most affected by new US copper tubes in Chile, Canada and Mexico, which according to US Census Bureau were the best suppliers of sophisticated copper and copper items in 2024.

“Like our steel and aluminum industry, our large American copper industry was decimated by global actors who attack our domestic production,” said Lutnick, the US trade secretary. “To recreate our copper industry, I will examine the introduction of possible tariffs.”

Lutnick said that the US industry and the national defense were dependent on copper and “if they are made in America, no exceptions, no exceptions”.

“It's time for copper to come home,” added Lutnick.

The White House official said that the examination would examine the imports of copper, copper concentrates, copper alloys, scrap and derivative products from the metal. The official refused to identify specific derivatives, and said that this would prejudice.

The official added that the Ministry of Energy recognized copper as a critical material due to the increased demand for solar energy technologies and global electrification, which indicated that it was the most frequently used material in US gun platforms.

The official said, based on the current demand for electric vehicles and artificial intelligence applications, it will be a US trade protection for the sector in the future.

The move is Trump's recent effort to build a collective bargaining wall in the country's economy in order to rebuild a long-term US production base and the new car of decades of trade relationships.

Trump said on Monday that the 25% general tariffs for imports from Mexico and Canada are separating before implementing March 4, despite the efforts to avoid them, by securing their US borders and the standstill of the fentanyl flow, the deadly opioid.
