DVIDS – News – Kentucky's military children thanked on children's day in Capitol

Frankfort, Ky. – On February 25, 2025, the Capitol of Kentucky State was filled with the noises of over 150 children, whose parents serve in the military children's military.

Children from the Commonwealth, who represented, learned, learned, explore and have fun children from the Kentucky National Guard Fort Knox and Fort Campbell. One of the things you learned during your visit was that the captain does not belong to the governor – it belongs to people in Kentucky.

They toured through the Capitol, saw military vehicles up close and tried flight simulators from the Kentucky aviation museum in Lexington. Some of the children even had the opportunity to Kentuckys Lt. -Gouperner Jacqueline Coleman.

McCoy Harvey, the son of Colonel John Harvey from the National Guard of the Kentucky Army, was thrilled to be at the event.

“I have a lot of fun,” he said. “I am learning new things. It's great! I'm really grateful that I came today. I've been here before, but I learned a lot of new things today.”

During the tour of the Capitol, the children visited the chamber of the Supreme Court, the House Chamber and the Senate Chamber. In the Senate Chamber, Karen Lamberton, Major General Hal Lamberton, the General Adjutant of Kentucky, spoke with the group about the importance of her visit.

“We are here to celebrate them and show them behind the scenes how the legislators affect laws that affect us all,” she said.

The children had the chance to imagine and share what they were best on the Capitol. They also talked about the military branches in which their parents serve.

The weather for the event was sunny and warm, which was a nice change compared to the heavy rain at the event of last year. This gave the children the opportunity to see the exhibitions of the National Guard. The displays present included a small model of a C-130 aircraft from the Kentucky Air National Guard, in which the children could climb and explore.

For Sophia Penn, the daughter of the US Army, Jason Penn, who works in property and in the guard's household office, this event was more than just a day away from school.

“I have skipped school today, so I really like it,” she laughed, adding that her father called her at school to tell her that she would come to this event. “But it is also very interesting to see new things, I might never have got this chance again, so I really liked that I was here today.”
Karen Lamberton hoped that the children all had a great time, but wanted to make sure that the children knew how important they were.

“If we don't do such things to show them, they are something special and loved, we would fail,” she said. “They also serve their country, just like their parents. I want them to know that we take care of them.”
