Early special election results show problems for the competitive San Mateo County Sheriff – NBC Bay Area

The first atmosphere in the special elections on Tuesday, competing for Sheriff Christina Corpus in San Mateo County, was published and it seems to be intended to lose her job.

Preliminary results published shortly after 8 p.m. show that 85.6% of the ballot papers that have been counted so far contribute to the fact that the San Mateo County supervisory authority will be released from the sheriff. A majority or more than 50%are required to adopt the change.

The voters in San Mateo County made their way to the surveys or sent their ballot papers to decide on measure A, a Charter change that would grant the supervisory authority the temporary authority to remove the sheriff.

By Monday, these results include ballot papers that were canceled in voting centers and the ballot papers obtained by Monday.

On Tuesday afternoon, the department for registration and election of the district received 91,112 mail-in voting slips and 1,216 ballot papers were handed over to coordination centers.

The Supervisory Board has held a special election after Corpus refused to withdraw from their tenure under devastating allegations. In November, a 400-page independent examination of their administration was published, which contained results of abuse of power, retaliation and intimidation.

“The people in this district earn a sheriff that they can trust, just like the employees of the Sheriff office, a sheriff that they can trust,” said Eliot Storch, secretary of the deputy Sheriff Association of San Mateo County, during a press conference immediately after the preliminary results of the election on Tuesday evening.

The DSA is one of the unions that have been pronounced against Corpus.

“You earn someone who will not commit these abuses who will not be corrupt and who will not cause all of these problems, so much that we only had to have a special choice because of their way,” said Storch.

After the publication of the report, it quickly came to resigned Corpus, but she was steadfast in her promise to remain classified. She said the attacks on her were politically motivated because she is a sheriff against a group of officers who are part of a “good old boys club”.

The Supervisory Board currently does not have the authority to remove the sheriff or another elected officer so that they put it on the ballot paper and bring the voters to the voters.

After discussing their options, the supervisory authorities decided that receiving measures is the fastest way to hand over the fastest way to remove the body. A call to recall would cost more money and take longer, she concluded.

Opponents of the measure A, including corpus, have mainly expressed concerns that the board of directors to remove a chosen civil servant could violate the democratic process.

“The special elections are not about public security – it is an obvious attempt to change political forces within the sheriff's office and to silence their voices,” said Corpus in February. “This is an attack on democracy, accountability and the future of law enforcement in San Mateo County.”

However, Storch believes that the coordination for or against measure gives a voter of San Mateo County the opportunity to tell whether corpus goes or remains.

“You voted in this choice. Your voice was heard,” said Storch. “In view of the focus of Sheriff Corpus and their actions, we believe that this was essentially an accelerated recall. If someone wanted to hear their voice, they had every opportunity to choose.”

Outside the DSA headquarters in Redwood City, celebrations were underway when the results were announced. Cheers broke out when they saw that a measure seemed overwhelming.

Storch spoke to reporters on behalf of the DSA when the initial batch of voter results received.

“We are very happy about this result,” said Storch. “Obviously, the results are not yet official, not every ball has yet been counted. But what we have seen from these first results so far was incredible and it really showed that we have the support of the community.”

Corpus did not respond to a request for a publication time.

Additional parts will continue to come out every hour on the election night.

The results of the day after the election day contained the ballot papers that were preserved after the election day and other ballot papers that are personally staffed will be published from Thursday.
