The head coach of East Robertson Derek Wix took a hard view of the mirror last summer after a below -average spring for his baseball program.

He knew that his team did not meet expectations or the standard that it had set in recent years.

From the beginning of the 2024 season, the Indians fought through inconsistencies. They lost four of their first five games after reaching the class 1a class 1a class 1a.

East scored two four-game loss strips at various points of the year and added a five-game crack that spread against Jo Byrns into the 8-1a championship series.

The Indians ended four games under 500: 19-, although they only fell one game behind the appearance of the third class A-State tournament. According to the coach, it was her first defeat since 2016 (17-19).

They went into the low season and searched for answers.

“We were very immature last year in situations and, due to the maturity level we had, were unable to get games out,” said Wix. “We let the other team in our heads, the referee or whatever negative things come from outside.

“We just couldn't overcome it.

His renewed focus on controllable results has so far paid dividends for the Indians.

East Robertson opened the season with a winning streak with four games, swept his three-game set against Knoxville Webb, Eagleton College and Career Academy and William Blount at the Sevier County High School and then won on March 14 with a walk-off over Springfield.

The Indians scored an average of over 10 runs and nine goals in their first four games of the season. They held opponents on a total of 20 runs, including a one hit shutout via WebB at the start of the season.

“I thought we played really well (in the first week),” said Wix. “Our jugs did a great job.

East Robertson (5: 1) continued his hot start on Tuesday in his 3-2 victory over Liberty Creek and former assistant coach Eli Carlisle.

King University Signe Gavin True fought a full performance with only one deserved run against the wolves. He hit six batteries and limited Liberty Creek on six goals.

True escapes jams in five of his seven innings to win his second victory of the year.

“I have the feeling that my approach during the game was to include my team and not try it alone,” said True. “I wanted to use them to my advantage and I thought they had done a great job today.

Liberty Creek (6-1) scored in the first two runs of the game in the first and second inn. Max Dohanos delivered an RBI single in the first and JT Porter added another in the second.

East Robertson reacted in the half of the home with a double steal that handed over Miller Cothron. The Indians were the game in the fourth game after Breyer Williams put an RBI double in the left Felecke in front of Wolves' starter Lucas Mcenany.

East took over his first lead in the fifth inning to a basic approach. Kason Young opened the frame with a single and steel two parking spaces later. After a productive bat from Cade Brooks, he rose to third place and later achieved an RBI Groundout from True.

“We have to fight the order and be hard outs,” said Wix. “We have preached this since we started in the low season.

True stranded runners in the goal position in each of his last two innings to seal the victory. He left the bases loaded in the sixth, excluded Zac McGuire and pulled Porter back to the midfield on a flyout.

The high -ranking right -handed man overcame a first situation in seventh place that forced Brennon Cox to end the game.

“It's fun to get out of here and act absolutely, but I also love the competition,” said True. “You are a really good team.
