Ex-school policeman who was caught on video recordings.

A former police officer from Miami-Dade School, who was caught in front of the camera, shot her ex-boyfriend, a deputy of the Miami-Dade sheriff office, guilty, under a plea deal in which she was served in prison for decades.

Yessenia Sanchez, 32, is a convicted criminal, after accepting the plea deal, which includes 30 years in prison and 20 years of probation.

Sanchez was charged with attempted first degree murder in November 2022.

“I think justice is served. I think she got what she deserves. I think she should have got more, but I'll take what she has,” said Colon Friday.

The authorities said that Sanchez, a former police officer in Miami-Dade, had followed Colon with an app and found him in his house in Haleeah. An argument broke out and Sanchez supposedly shot him and drove away.

Graphic videos of Colon's house, which was made available by the public prosecutor, showed that the couple spoke when Sanchez raised a weapon, aimed at the victim's face and opened the fire. Colon collapsed on his back, motionless, and Sanchez went away.

Colon, a 17-year-old veteran of the Miami-Dade police authority, survived the attack, but has subjected several operations and therapies and is in a wheelchair with permanent injuries.

“Nobody is immune to terror and the horror of domestic violence. The former police officer Yessenia Sanchez from her ex-boyfriend, another police officer, unfortunately proves this point. Their violent action showed the mere explosion of aggression that is inherent in every incident of domestic violence,” said Miami-Dade prosecutor Katherine. “Sanchez '30-year prison sentence cannot restore the physical damage she has done when she tried to kill the man she had once loved. Unfortunately, these scars will take forever.”

Colon has left the department since then.

“You ended my career. I wouldn't have ended my career, but she ended my career and she knows that very well. My career would not end,” he said. “Thank God for my family, for everyone who was there for me. It was tough. But without them I would probably not have gone through it.”

The victim's family said that the plea deal gives them some justice, but they believe that Sanchez will never really understand the pain they caused.

“I don't think justice is ever served, but at some point you have to close a chapter and so it will close. It will go to prison at least 30 years. And that is at least 30 years that she will not hurt anyone on the outside,” said Brother David Colon.

Sanchez had resigned from her job as an officer in 2021 instead of being released in a separate case after her arrest for domestic violence.
