Fatal pedestrian collision in Prince George's County examined after attempted traffic stops

Baltimore, MD – The Department of Independent Investigations (IID) of the Maryland office of the Attorney General examined after an attempted traffic stop that took place on Friday evening in Chillum, Prince George's County, Maryland, in Chillum, Prince George's County.

The preliminary investigation showed on Friday, February 28, 2025, at around 10:15 p.m., an officer of the Hyattsville City Police Department (HPD) tried a traffic stop at a Lincoln sedan in the 3300 block of the East-West Autobahn. The driver of the vehicle initially stopped and then fled to the East-West Highway in front of the officer and drove west. The officer followed the car shortly before the persecution was terminated when both cars approached the intersection of the East-West Autobahn and 23RD Avenue. The driver of the sedan drove through the intersection, raced onto the shoulder of the highway and hit a pedestrian on the side of the road. The officer immediately went to the scene of the crash. The driver was taken into custody and taken to a hospital with non -life -threatening injuries. The pedestrian was declared dead on site. The officer involved was equipped with a camera worn and the vehicle was equipped with a dashboard camera.

The IID will generally publish the name of the deceased and all involved civil servants within two working days after the incident, although this time can be extended as required in accordance with the IID protocol.

IID generally publishes the camera material carried with body within 20 working days after an incident. There can be situations in which more than 20 days are required, including if investigators need more time to complete witness interviews if technical delays are caused by the need to protect the identity of civil witnesses or to enable family members to display the video before it is published to the public.
