Fairmont – Several girls in Fairmont High School are preparing to take part in the first season of the Gir's Flag football school. The new club is sponsored by the Minnesota Vikings.

“Last year there were perhaps eight teams who started this league.” Mahoney said Mahoney, the director of the district. “Then I got an e -mail with the inscription in autumn that the Vikings really try to promote the seven flag football of women.”

Mahoney asked about the program and because of his pronounced interest, the Vikings gave a grant of $ 12,000 to start the Fairmont program.

“In addition, they also pay for every team to have 25 uniforms.” Said Mahoney.

The uniforms are expected to be received together with seven boxes with devices such as flags and belts at the end of this month. Other required materials are tunnels and mouth protection.

Before he got the ball rolling, Mahoney sent out a Google form to measure interest and also spoke to the school's administrative team.

“They gave me the green light and thought it would be a good idea.” Said Mahoney.

At the beginning, almost 30 girls plan participation in grades 9 to 12.

One of them is the newcomer Adriana Lidding. She is active in various sports and activities, including gymnastics, volleyball, band and student council, but is happy to try something new.

“I've always wanted to do something with football. My family knows football and I am familiar with it, so I'm happy to try it out. “ she said.

Girls Flag Football is the latest offer at the Fairmont High School behind Unified Cardinals and the weightlifting association, both of which have been added in recent years.

“We have so many activities for children. This is viewed as club sport so that you can still be in any kind of spring sport. You can be in golf or track or softball. “ Said Mahoney.

He said there could be some unconventional practice times to get it running and that games are planned for Sundays. There will be eight games in total and the Fairmont High School will organize one on April 27th. Playoffs will take place in the first week of June with a state tournament that takes place shortly afterwards.

The next team is currently in Fairmont in Waterville. According to Mahoney, two other districts in the Big South Conference have shown interest in founding their own team, but they are not yet in operation.

The training begins in April and Mahoney himself will train this first season.

“I threw several feelers out of it, but it is important to me because it is football and I am also the father of three girls. This is something I want to do and want a long -lasting legacy here. “ Said Mahoney.

Brad Johnson and Courtney Schoellman will also help with coaching, and Mahoney said he greets everyone who is interested in coaching in the future to achieve them.

While there is a lot of excitement for the first season, Mahoney admitted that there are many strangers because it is new. However, he believes that it will not only cut off well, but will grow significantly.

“The vision for this began with the Olympic Games. In 2028 this will be an Olympic sport and the hope is that this will become a sponsored event in the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL). “ Said Mahoney.

At the moment, these participants are only looking forward to getting into something new.

“It is another opportunity for girls to exceed a sporting event in which they have never really had the opportunity. Said Mahoney.
