Find out more about the Florida Slaves – Beach Talk Radio News





Did you know that over 61,000 liberated slaves lived in Florida at the end of the civil war? How were they accepted into the economy and society? What role did Coastal Southwest Florida play?

Through a prioritally recognized author and internationally recognized lecturer Robert N. Macomber to find out what happened to the 61,745 slaves in Florida at the end of the civil war. This is the last public meeting and the presentation of the 2025 spring season of the Estero Island Historical Society. Macomber's presentation will take place on Monday, March 10th at 2 p.m. on the 3rd floor of Fort Myers Beach Library. Register to take part HERE.

They will learn from enormous efforts by the US Army officers, church missionaries and volunteers to integrate former slaves into society as productive citizens. You will find out what works and what does not work, the special mission for finding facts in our coastal area in the southwest of Florida, as some Floridians tried to thwart the efforts, and the legacies of this turbulent time, which repeated in the 1960s. This is a little -known but very important part of Florida's fascinating history.
