Firefighters flee, as Hutchinson Business exploded, NTSB Investigating

Wichita, Kan. (Kwch) – The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is located in Hutchinson and examines an explosion caused by a natural gas leak on Saturday. At around 9:26 a.m., the crews were called to the area to examine the leak and set up an evacuation zone of 0.7 miles. The explosion in Stephen's auto parts followed shortly afterwards. Nobody was injured.

Five NTSB investigators are in Hutchinson to document the accident scene and carry out an initial visual examination of the pipeline and the equipment involved.

NTSB examinations include three primary areas: human factors, the pipeline system and the operating environment. As part of this process, the investigators collect the following information and records:

  • Human performance data that are relevant for the accident and the reaction
  • Operator qualification and training documents
  • Testimonies
  • Pipeline operating practices and procedures
  • Pipeline system cards and historical records
  • Relevant pipeline printing before and during the accident
  • Pipeline maintenance records
  • Pipeline Integrity Management Plans/records
  • Pipeline security management system Plan/records
  • Specific AS-found location of pipeline facilities and nearby structures
  • Local environmental conditions including soil conditions for buried pipelines
  • Scope and path of the released gas
  • Weather forecasts and weather at the time of the accident
  • All available surveillance videos, including doors' cameras

The Hutchinson fire brigade released a video from the scene on Monday. It shows the moment when the explosion occurred.
