The 5.45 kilometers (3.39 miles) Shanghai International Circuit is a specially built race track, which was organized for the first time in 2004. His layout resembles the Chinese character “Shang” of the first part of the name of the city of Shanghai. Max Verstappen won a commanding victory there last season before Lando Norris, but the teams have little experience with a track in which F1 was not taken from 2020 to 2023 during the Covid 19 pandemic. The sprint race on Saturday is the first of six this season.

Norris won the Australian Grand Prix of the season opening for McLaren after surviving a slide on the track in the rain, and a late challenge from second-placed. George Russell was third for Mercedes. Norris' teammate and potential title competitor Oscar Piatri extend on the street and recovered to reach ninth place after Lewis Hamilton was overtaken late, who was tenth in a frustrating debut for Ferrari.

“It was fun to make these last rounds … I am very happy to bring it home, scored good points. That is, let's say, a decent starting point for us.” – Verpappen

“I had to struggle with the balance, but it was an important race to learn more about the car and under different weather conditions and gain more experience with a new team.” – Hamilton
