From the record snow drought to historical snow accumulation

2025 is now in the society of the record winter with 16.8 “snow. But could we see more? The chief meteorologist Tim Pandajis has the data.

Norfolk, Va.-in this winter, Norfolk began the continuation of the second longest snow drought, which benefits, a phase of unusually milder and dry conditions in which snow enthusiasts were eagerly waiting for the first measurable accumulation.

Weeks did not deliver storm systems that drove through the region, no significant winting decay, with either rain producing or completely missing the area. However, this longer snow -covered day ended in early January when a cold front in combination with favorable atmospheric conditions enabled the first measurable snowfall in years.

This was a significant shift in seasonal weather patterns and signaled a more active winter – one that would create some of the most remarkable snowfall in recent history.

In a dramatic turn of events in 2025, the eight -part year has now entered the record books at Norfolk International Airport. From the end of February, the total amount of snowfall is on an impressive 16.8 inches, which is largely located to the historic snowstorm on February 19 and 20 thanks to the historical snowstorm, 2010 and 1980.

As a rule, winter storm systems place the Hampton Roads region along the dividing line between rain and snow, which often leads to a significantly higher snowfall for Richmond compared to Norfolk. However, this winter has opposed expectations, with Norfolk currently leading snow accumulation.

With such an active winter season, an important question arises: Is Norfolk ended with snowfall for the year?

Historical records show that snowfall is not unusual in March. Since 1946, Norfolk has had at least 0.1 inch snow in March 27 – about 34% of cases. In addition, the city recorded at least one centimeter of snow 12 times in March, which is an appearance rate of 15%.

In the past trends of Norfolk under the ten snow -covered years, the measurable snowfall continued in half of these cases in March. In view of the approximately 30-day return time for snow events this winter, there is an additional snowfall if we approach ourselves in mid-March.
