Further details that were opened on the new High School set in Uptown

The construction of the new Second Ward High School is scheduled to begin in early 2026.

Charlotte, NC-and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools District has announced further details about the opening of a new Second Ward High School in Uptown Charlotte.

The new Magnet School will contain classrooms with a special focus on health curriculum. The school is located on the old U -Bahn school area.

As WCNC Charlottes Kayland Hagwood previously reported, the school was opened in 1923 as the only high school for black students in Charlotte, which was surrounded by resources that support the black community in a quarter called Brookly.

The second high school in Uptown was all that was left of the school after it was torn down, and the Brooklyn district was destroyed in Charlotte's first wave of urban renewal that replaced thousands of black Charlottan.

The construction of the new Second Ward High School is scheduled to begin in early 2026 after the location Clearing and geotechnical tests. The demolition of the old U -Bahn school is almost complete and the location is prepared for the new building.

The school is expected to open in August 2028.

The project is managed by Rodgers Builders, Inc. in cooperation with Walter B. Davis Company. LS3P Associates acts as an architect.
