German elections 2025: What is AfD and why is it trend?

Regarding the second largest party in relation to Numbers in Germany, right -wing extremist Alternative for Germany party (German: Alternative for Germany) has reached an important milestone that ensures the position just 12 years after its foundation.
AfD achieved about 20% of the votes, which reflected a two -time increase compared to its election performance of 2021 and turned out to be a dominant political unity in East Germany.
During the victory ceremony, AfD's main candidate Alice Weidel opened openness to the formation of a coalition with the victorious center and right alliance from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU) and criticized the CDU leader Friedrich Merz.
Weidel spoke to the supporters and said: “They wanted to halve us, but the opposite happened!”

AfD officials have questioned the same rights for Germans with a migration background, and some were even controlled by the Nazi era for the use of prohibited symbols. In particular, Thuringian AfD chairwoman Björn Höcke received two convictions in 2024 because he had used the paramilitary slogans of the Hitler era.
Mass demonstrations against the AfD occurred nationwide before the elections, with demonstrators considering the rescue of the party as threatening democracy and immigrants.

Despite the election winnings, the performance of the AfD did not remain the internal efforts for first place. In a television debate, Merz refused to make coalition options and cited fundamental political disagreements, especially with regard to EU membership, currency and support of Ukraine.
With a view to the future, Weidel has positioned itself for the Chancellor Chancellor in 2029 and explained on the AfD television: “We will overtake the CDU/CSU. And then we will receive a mandate for the government.”
