“Golf didn't start in America”

Rory McIlroy sees himself as a global player due to the variety of goals that his golf season comprises every year. The northern Irish has only pretended to be a good example, since he believes that this is the direction in which the world golf should move.

During his press conference before the tournament at the Players Championship, Mcilroy explained that there should not only be more tournaments outside the USA in the PGA tour calendar, but that some of the top-class events should be played at international event locations.

“I think there is a chance that it is worldwide,” said Mcilroy. “Yes, I have the feeling that Golf is not only played in America. It didn't start in America. It is played in many other places in the world.”

“I think there is the opportunity to have some of the major tournaments outside of America … I think we need larger events in Australia.

“I think the Australian Open have to be set up for a higher posture and somehow kept – the Australian Open was always a very big tournament at the time, and I think that could be one that could be increased with some others.”

The Northern Irishman also spoke about the idea of a “world tour”, which was mentioned several times in the past few weeks by PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. The idea is to create a circuit that brings all the best players in the world together.

The four -time major winner supported the project and even shared his vision of a tournament plan for the later tour.

“It has to be once a month, if not even more. I think 12 times a year or maybe a hint of higher than that, I think I would be a good number.”

Rory McIlroy used an example of a schedule that contains tournaments all over the world. He has been starting the year in the Middle East for several years and then follows the PGA tour. After the season in America ends with the Tour Championship, the Northern Irishman drives to Europe to end its season on the DP World Tour.

The PGA tour contains only eight international tournaments that are planned for the 2025 season. All of them are regular or opposite events, the categories of lowest events on the circuit.

Three of these tournaments are played in the so-called Fedex Cup case, which includes the weakest fields of the entire season.

The only increased event in the PGA Tour calendar, which is played on foreign soil, is the open championship, the fourth major of the season.
