So what exactly are shingles? Read on to find out more.

Schindeln, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral disease caused by the Varicella Zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. If you ever had the chickenpox, the virus stays inactive in your body long after you have healed.

When aging, the virus can reactivate and represent as shingles. It typically comes in the form of a gang of increased red dots, which ultimately develop into fluid -filled bubbles. These ligaments of shingles can occur anywhere on the body, but mostly appear on the upper body, suitcase or face.

The level of pain of the shingles can vary, but should never be underestimated. They should also not be seen as “adult chickenpox”.

In an interview 2018 with Yahoo CanadaPresent Dennis Bowden, who developed with 39 shingles, called the virus “the worst pain” that they have ever experienced. Bowden compared the pain to an “intensive electric shock” and said, his first outbreak, which took place on his jaw, felt like a “jerk intensive pain”.

Apart from the tingling, itchy skin or the burning sensation, which can occur a few days before a shingle, people experience different symptoms, depending on where their shingle group is located.

For example, if you develop shingles on the face, facial paralysis, hearing loss or even blindness can occur. In some rare cases, the brain can be ignited, which may be fatal. Experts recommend visiting your health service provider or an emergency clinic if you develop bubbles on your face to prevent permanent damage to your eyesight.

Apart from the bubbles that tend to crust within a few days, people with shingles can experience nausea, fever, chills, vomiting, headache and sensitivity to light.

In an interview from 2018, Dr. John Murray, an emergency doctor in Ontario and BC, told Yahoo Canada The fact that one of the frequent complications of shingles is a secondary infection: “Every time you have a break, you can get a secondary bacterial infection. People can really get sick – feverish and intravenous antibiotics need.”

While some people may only experience shingles once, others can experience several shingle outbreaks in the course of their lives. According to experts, certain drugs, an impaired immune system or stress can contribute to a shingle.

“I had patients with older shingles and recently had the death of a spouse in the family, the loss of a spouse, under emotional or psychological stress,” said Dr. Michael Curry, a doctor in Vancouver, said Yahoo Canada 2018. “I've seen that many times. However, [shingles] Start, we don't understand completely, but we know that emotional or psychological stress also affects the body's physical health. “

Although a shingle outbreak of three to five weeks can take, your health service provider can prescribe an antiviral drug that can help shorten the length of your illness. These antiviral drugs work best at the first sign of a breakout and can help to prevent long -term side effects of the virus, such as long -term nerve pain, which are called posterpetic neuralgia.

Apart from antivirals, your health service provider can prescribe pain relievers or lotions to relieve the rash itself.

Schindeln (herpes zoster) are not contagious. However, the virus, the ES-VARICELLA zoster, can be. Although the risk of transmission is low, a person with the varicella zoster virus can be infected by taking direct contact with the liquid within a shingle bubble.

According to the centers for the control and prevention of diseases (CDC), the Varicella-Zoster virus can be transferred from a person with shingles to a person who had not previously had no chickenpox or has never had the chickenpox vaccine. If you are infected with the Varicella Zoster virus, develop the chickenpox wines.

As soon as you have overcome chicken quits, the Varicella Zoster virus remains inactive in your body, which means that you can later develop shingles if the virus is “reactivated” due to age, stress, impaired immune system or certain drugs.

If you cover your shingles from the rash and often wash your hands, you can prevent the transfer of the varicella zoster virus.

In Canada there is currently only an approved shingle vaccine, Shingrix. Health Canada recommends that people over 50 are vaccinated against shingles, even if they have previously used up a shingle.

You should talk to your health service provider about which vaccine is suitable for you, based on your personal medical history.
