Health concerns linger after a massive scrap place in Camden – NBC10 Philadelphia

People who live near Camden's Waterfront say that they want to answer in a metal scrap almost two weeks after a massive fire. The flames are out, but their concerns still remain.

A resident, Aliya Jones, knew exactly where the thick smoke came from when she looked out of her door on Friday, February 21st.

Jones has been living in this neighborhood for years and says that she had already seen fire in the EMR Recycling Center, but that that happened two weeks ago caused her and others to evacuate.

Although she is back home, she says that she still feels the effects.

“It's terrifying. It is nightmarish. I didn't sleep, “said Jones.

It is now one of the many residents with concerns about the health of their community and the company's answers.

“We don't want our neighborhood to burn down and we don't want to deal with chemicals,” said Maria Davis, resident of Camden, to NBC10.

The mayor of Camden, Victor Carstarphen, emphasized that the examination had not yet been completed and that firefighters had not caused a cause of the fire.

“We will find out. We will go forward. Something should never happen. Our families should never be expelled,” said Carstarphen.

The Camden fire brigade published an incident report in which some of the fire fighting efforts were detailed.

In it they wrote that several companies were referred to on the surrounding pile on the surrounding pile on an industrial grant that leads to a building due to the strong fire spreading material on the surrounding pile.

The city leaders in Camden say that their focus is now on the evaluation of the after-action.

Jones and her neighbors hoped to get answers from EMR at a community meeting at the beginning of this week, but the company shifted.

Now the community works together to plan a march that ends outside of EMR that is planned for next Tuesday.

NBC10 turned to EMR, but they did not answer our request for comments.
