How family construction tests can link to a murder examination

The Australian police use advanced DNA determination techniques to identify people without regulating new legislation to regulate use despite increasing data protection concerns.

DNA databases are traditionally used by the police to meet a sample with a remains or not identified directly.

However, a technology called family search is used to identify people who are not in the database.

Family search is the ability to identify people based on family connections.

In some cases, the police used an arrest warrant to access consumer databases such as Ancestry.com and Gedmatch. This can make the police identify a suspect because someone in their family has submitted DNA to see their family tree.

This throws the network much wider and can connect people without any other reason to an examination than with the one with which they are related.

Why should innocent people take care of who has their DNA?

Criminal defense lawyer Felix Ralph is concerned about the effects on privacy and compares this new technology with old morality in the Bible.

“The son should not be held responsible for the father's sins. We speak of people who may be exposed to an exceptionally stressful examination that is connected to each other in their genetic compilation. ”

This is exactly what happened to the Louisiana filmmaker Michael Usry. Michael was a suspect in rape and a murder that was 3000 km away. He spoke to Listnr's Should I spit? Podcast.

“My father had submitted a DNA test through the HLT church, and it finally led me to become a suspect in a murder.“” Said Michael.

In Should I spit? The journalist Claire Aird follows this DNA sample to find out who took it, for what reason and how it was used.

How will DNA be used in the future?

Felix Ralph fears that DNA processing will be cheaper and faster, there is nothing to stop, which he calls “functional crawl”.

I have no doubt that the police will eventually be able to put the swab on your phone, search the database and find a agreement.“”

Felix says that there is a role in family search in severe criminal investigations, but only if all other paths were exhausted.

“I always use the example that Little Billy commits shop theft or bicycle theft. Should we allow it to do it? Should it be a routine? ”
