ICO starts Tikok examination on the use of children's data

The British data protection authority has initiated an investigation by Tikkok, Reddit and Imgur after concerns about the way the websites used to use the personal data of children.

The information commissioner (ICO )'s office has revealed the news this morning and claims that “recommendation systems” on the websites could lead to the fact that adolescents in need of protection are operated inappropriate or harmful.

In the case of IMGUR and REDDIT, the regulatory authority checks how the platforms use the personal data of children and their use of old -age security measures that appreciate or check the age of a child so that age -appropriate content can be delivered to them.

John Edwards, information commissioner, said that technological innovation cannot lead to the expense of the privacy of the children.

“My message is simple. If social media and video sharing platforms want to benefit from the company in Great Britain, you must comply with the data protection law. Responsibility to keep children secure online is firmly at the door of the companies that offer these services, and my office is steadfast in his obligation to hold them into account, ”he continued.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to ensure children, parents and supervisors in Great Britain that we are working on your name to make the online world more secure. When announcing these investigations, we make it clear to the public which measures we are currently taking to ensure that children's information rights are confirmed. This is a primary area and we will provide updates via further measures that we decide that we want to take. “

The ICO is looking for violations of the data protection law. In April 2023 it gained a fine of Tikok, 12.7 million GBP, after claiming that the platform had not obtained the consent of the parents for users under the age of 13. It was also found that the company carried out no reasonable reviews to identify and prevent children in the use of the social media app.

The data protection guard said that he would work closely with the regulatory authority of telecommunications/communication of OFCOM, which is responsible for the enforcement of the online security law.
